Going Beyond the Default: Custom Google Maps API Integration in Wix

At Digital Edge, we love showing what’s possible when you push Wix beyond its default tools. A great example is our work with Business Durham where we built a custom Google Maps integration to showcase available commercial properties across County Durham.

While Wix does offer a built-in Google Maps widget, it has limitations: you can display pins, but you can’t search by proximity, filter results, or add custom functionality when someone clicks on a map pin. Business Durham needed more.
That’s where the Google Maps API and Wix Velo came in.
Why We Used the Google Maps API Instead of the Standard Wix Map
The default Wix-Google Maps app is great for simple sites, but for property searches or directory-style websites, it quickly falls short. By working directly with the Google Maps API, we were able to:
Integrate with Wix dataset filters – users can search properties and instantly see matching results on the map.
Enable search by proximity – visitors can search for properties within a chosen radius, a feature not possible with Wix’s default map. This was particularly useful for our work on another project, PT Booker, to ensure clients can always filter to their closest physical therapist!

Customise pin behaviour – clicking on a location pin now displays tailored information, making the experience interactive and user-friendly, and not limited to displaying only the default title.
Sync results with on-page searches – the map isn’t just a static embed; it’s fully connected to Business Durham’s property database. For more on what we can do with custom-built searches and filters, take a look at our blog on Holocaust testimony UK here.
The Result
The end product is a dynamic, user-friendly property search tool that helps businesses find the right location faster. For Business Durham, this means a smoother user journey and a platform that truly showcases County Durham as a hub for opportunity.
Why This Matters for Other Wix Projects
Many Wix site owners think they’re limited to the features inside the Wix Editor. In reality, Wix Velo and third-party APIs like Google Maps open the door to highly customised solutions. Whether you’re running a directory site, event listings, a local business map, or a property portal, the Google Maps API can be integrated to provide:
Radius-based searches
Dynamic map filtering
Rich, interactive pin functionality
Seamless syncing with Wix datasets
